Mark Fast is definitely one of my top picks at London Fashion Week. He has this knack for pushing the boundaries further than most and brings a cheeky flair to his designs that really makes them stand out. While some brands might seem over the top with their grunge or punk styles, Mark’s creations just hit the right note. He turns knitwear into something cool by shredding it and adding holes, working as much with the spaces between yarn as the yarn itself.
There’s always a lot happening with hair and makeup at his shows. Last year, I talked about the scene backstage when there were frizzy, ginger wigs styled in a bold wedge shape. This year, they went for black, longer wigs with straggly, uneven ends, giving off a grungy vibe that’s quite unexpected for Spring/Summer. Nick Irwin for TIGI headed the styling. He seems to enjoy using wigs, opting for cheaper ones and melting their strands with heat while applying TIGI Salt Spray to get a matted look. He backcombed them for more volume at the crown and finished with TIGI’s Your Highness Hairspray, repeating this on many wigs.
It’s clear why Nick and Mark work well together. He loves stepping away from the norm and finds fun in experimenting with wigs, melting and styling without harming a single strand of real hair. Personally, I think the wigs add a sense of uniformity, making the models look like a Mark Fast Army strutting down the runway.
The makeup by BareMinerals didn’t follow typical Spring/Summer trends either — dark, petrol lips with bare eyes. The skin was flawless and radiant, with highlights around the eyes and cheekbones to balance the dark lips. Butter London took care of the nails, with Katie-Jane Hughes crafting a “gorgeous gothic raver girl” look. It featured black polish under a deep oxblood red, topped with a ‘petrol’ layer for depth. All this black, petrol, and edgy hair was a refreshing shift from the usual pretty, glowing looks I noticed elsewhere. I’m already excited for what’s coming next season!
