Motilo, a fashion website, is hosting a competition where you can win a £100 shopping spree. Each week, they present a style challenge to help tackle the classic “what to wear” dilemma. This week’s challenge is about figuring out how to wear pastels without looking like a dinner lady or someone who has accidentally boiled their clothes.
Personally, I’m not instantly attracted to pastel clothes because they often make my skin tone look kind of washed out. But then again, I feel the same about wearing black or white. We all have colors that suit us and those that don’t.
To handle pastels, I’ve chosen to add a bold touch to my outfit. I’ve paired a pretty pink Topshop sweater with a splash of animal print, using a well-known leopard print skirt from Topshop and a fun cat motif. Though my cat looks annoyed, he’s just naturally stoic during photo sessions. A bit of bronzer completes the look for healthy, glowing skin, but avoid overdoing it as too much contrast with pastels isn’t flattering.
If you have pastels and a styling tip, snap a photo of yourself and share it on Instagram with the hashtag fashiondilemma so Motilo can see it. Be sure to follow @Motilo on Instagram to find out if you’ve won. This week’s contest closes at 12pm on February 25th.
Here are some personal tips for styling pastels, based on past trial and error: 1) Incorporate some prints, as solid pastel outfits can resemble an ice-cream sundae. 2) Avoid pairing pastel tops with black bottoms—a strange combination. The most interesting pastel looks usually involve mixing in some bold or unique elements. When in doubt, a touch of faded denim works well, adding a casual feel without being too contrasting.
Have any tips of your own for wearing pastels? I’d love to hear them! Are there any pastel enthusiasts out there? I recently saw a woman looking stunning in head-to-toe pastels with pastel pink hair—not for the faint-hearted!
