I’m back with some fantastic wardrobe must-haves to get you through the autumn season. From a cool, boyish coat to a sultry mid-length skirt, I’ve got all the bases covered. Just keep in mind, I’m still working with a bit of a post-baby belly and, well, quite a substantial chest, so I’ve dressed accordingly. Or at least I’ve tried to. Hopefully, this helps others in a similar style predicament—I’ve noticed that pulling in my stomach muscles until they ache can help smooth things out!
First up on my autumn essentials list: the chunky knit. This one from AND/OR at John Lewis is a lovely blush color with a flattering cut. I paired it with gray skinny jeans, also by AND/OR, and some wonderfully comfortable brown boots from Dune. These Powars boots add just the right amount of lift without risking a twisted ankle if you need to run for the bus. They have a kind of smart, equestrian vibe in this chestnut shade, perfect with skinny jeans.
Next, this swallow-print shirt from Boden is a great addition to your autumn wardrobe. It’s made from jersey, which is thicker than the usual silk or cotton shirts, making it warm and cozy. It’s even on sale now, a nice bonus!
The Alexandra dress from Hush is another must-have, crafted from a lovely, thick, warm fabric. It has a soft, ribbed texture with a drapey top that flatters over the fitted skirt section. It looks super chic with heels, thanks to its eighties-style long sleeves and voluminous top, but it also pairs nicely with flatter, casual boots. Like the Merlin boots from Topshop, which are very trendy with their rock-chick studs and buckles! They have a unique look with a biker-boot feel and a dainty pointed toe—ideal with black skinny jeans and a leather jacket.
A boyish cut coat is a great buy for autumn, adding a laid-back, effortless flair to the simplest outfits. This cocoon coat from Kin at John Lewis has cropped sleeves and ends just below the knee, giving a delicate touch to your wrists and legs. It works well with light denim and a pair of sleek court shoes. The new Sledge style from LK Bennett, in an autumnal oxblood suede, is one to watch out for.
As for a cricket jumper, this “oversized” one from Boden is a piece I’ve been pondering, but it’s definitely a keeper. It’s not actually oversized in my opinion, but it fits comfortably and extends past the hips. It keeps the kidneys warm, which is essential when the weather turns chilly (at least, that’s what my mom always says). The colorful banding adds a cheerful touch.
Finally, if you’re looking to spice up your wardrobe, mix patterns like animal print on tweed. It’s a fun way to break away from plain denim and classic sweaters. This tweed pencil skirt from Boden comes in various patterns and colors and tends to run large. Pair it with a top in the same print from LK Bennett, but be cautious if you’re busty—the neckline is high and wide, so you might want to cinch it at the waist with high-waisted jeans or a pencil skirt for a flattering hourglass look.
And there you have it—some (hopefully!) helpful ideas to refresh your wardrobe as the temperature drops. While I haven’t highlighted a bag in this roundup, my trusty Mulberry Lily complements nearly everything and has held up remarkably over the years. It was a smaller investment back then than it would be to buy new now, but it’s proven to be worth it.
