The recent stretch of hot weather has given me plenty of opportunities to put various sunscreens to the test. I’ve tried everything from matte and mineral sunscreens to budget-friendly options and pricier ones. I’ve also experimented with moisturizing sunscreens, those meant for single applications, and top-up mists.
You might wonder how I keep track of all these products. Here’s my method: I use a “control” sunscreen on one half of my face—one I’m very familiar with—while testing a new product on the other half. This approach helps me rule out any unusual variables, like my skin being unusually dry or oily. It also allows me to determine if a new serum or leftover cleanser is affecting my skin’s reaction to the sunscreen. Without this control, comparing different sunscreens objectively can be tricky.
The sunscreen I know inside and out is the Anthelios XL from La Roche-Posay. It’s a velvet-finish, non-chalky sunscreen with broad-spectrum SPF50 protection, meaning it shields against UVA and UVB rays that cause aging and burning. It’s incredibly lightweight and a staple under my makeup. I’ve used it countless times without any issues like pilling, and it’s compatible with various products like facial oils and heavy moisturizers.
Although I talk about Anthelios frequently, I wanted to share my sunscreen testing process before diving into reviews. This compact, fragrance-free sunscreen has become my go-to, especially if you have combination or oily skin. In summertime, I prefer its lighter texture over more moisturizing alternatives. However, if you have drier skin, there are excellent SPF products out there, like CeraVe SPF25, which is hydrating yet lightweight and ideal for sensitive skin.
You can find Anthelios XL on various online platforms, and there’s even a new pocket version, which is incredibly convenient. The packaging is straightforward and perfect for travel without any unnecessary excess.
I’ll soon be back with more sunscreen reviews, hoping this sunny weather continues a bit longer!
