Sunscreen Struggles: Battling Breakouts

Sunscreen Struggles: Battling Breakouts

We’re diving into some common sunscreen issues, especially now that the sun is out and people are thinking about sun protection. Really, sunscreen is something we should use all year, not just when it’s hot. Many folks only reach for it in the warm months; maybe it needs a new name, like “lightscreen,” to remind us!

I think moisturizers with SPF are great because they become part of our daily routine rather than just something we think of in sunny weather. If you use them as you would regular sunscreen, your skin gets the protection it needs.

One problem people often talk about is how sunscreen can sting your eyes. There are tips to avoid that, but let’s tackle another issue: sunscreen causing breakouts. It’s frustrating when you try to protect your skin only for it to react badly. If your sunscreen is making your skin oily and clogging your pores, consider trying oil-free options. They work well for acne-prone skin, too.

Paula’s Choice Resist SPF50 is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. It offers strong protection, feels like water, and leaves no residue. Plus, it’s oil-free, making it suitable for all skin types. It’s £35 and you can use it daily unless your skin is very dry.

If you like a light and fresh feel, check out some of my top sunscreen picks. Kiehl’s Aqua Gel is another good option. It’s lightweight and won’t melt or slide even in humid weather, ideal for exercising.

If chemical sunscreens don’t work for you, consider trying mineral ones. Some find chemical filters irritating, while others don’t like the chalky texture of mineral sunscreens. However, there are now silky and lightweight mineral options available, like Ultra Violette’s Lean Screen SPF50, Hawaiian Tropic’s SPF30 Skin Milk, Skingredients Skin Shield SPF50, and Coola Mineral Matte Cucumber SPF30.

Mineral sunscreens often have a matte finish, which can be great for oily skin and a perfect makeup base. For some reason, I find I need less foundation on top.

Just as important as choosing the right sunscreen is making sure to clean it off well at the end of the day. Sunscreens are made to last, so a good cleanser is key. I recommend starting with a balm cleanser like Beauty Pie’s Hot Oil Double Cleansing Balm. Use it with a flannel to remove everything, including eye makeup, then follow up with an exfoliating wash like CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser if you’re worried about breakouts. It helps to keep pores clear.

If you prefer a swipe-and-go product, Paula’s Choice BHA Liquid Exfoliant is fantastic. I use it regularly to prevent hormonal breakouts by applying it to a cotton pad and focusing on my t-zone and nose, then continuing with a light skincare routine.
