Approaching Forty: My Style Aspirations

Approaching Forty: My Style Aspirations

These days, it’s pretty rare for an outfit to make me feel completely fantastic without any worries—no concern about a dress flying up or a button popping off because it’s too tight. It’s not just about having kids; I’ve always found dressing myself challenging. By the time I manage to put together something decent that matches and doesn’t feel like torture to wear, I’m more relieved than anything else. I’ve had my share of fashion mishaps, from tripping over my own legs at Levi’s in Oxford Street in 2009 to almost dislocating a shoulder in a Dolce & Gabbana corset dress in Mayfair back in 2010.

But lately, I’ve started paying attention to clothes that genuinely make me feel good and have put together a bit of a fashion wishlist. For me, feeling great in clothes isn’t just about looking stylish or expensive; it’s also about practicality and comfort. I love a skirt that lets me catch a bus without worrying about exposure, a power suit that’s cool with sneakers, or a cozy cashmere sweater that elevates even the oldest jeans.

What I’ve realized is that I want my clothes to deliver on three fronts: comfort, elegance, and smart design. Intelligent design means having clothes that fit and flatter, like a dress that cinches and shapes but still hides what you want hidden. Even a simple sweater should enhance my figure rather than make me look boxy.

This is my style wishlist as I approach forty—not interested in fast fashion, cropped items, or overpriced, flimsy pieces that only look good on models. I’m avoiding anything constricting or uncomfortable, like tight gussets or outerwear leggings. It doesn’t mean I’ve sworn off fashion, though. I still avoid lycra for public outings and can’t grasp why some find “ugly” footwear appealing.

My style philosophy now requires my wardrobe to work harder—comfort is essential, but I still want to look polished. I’ve noticed some fashion investments paying off over the years, like a well-cut Jil Sander coat or a durable Burberry trench. Even though they were pricey at the time, their quality means they’ve lasted ages, outliving many high street alternatives.

Originally, I just wanted to share some updates on outfits I love. I often gravitate toward brands with classic tailoring like Joseph, MaxMara, or Stella McCartney for inspiration. Pieces from Me+Em, like a dress and jumpsuit I wore to recent events, made me feel so good I had to write about it.

The dress has such a satisfying weight to it, as if you’re wearing something with real substance. It feels luxurious because it’s crafted with plenty of fabric, letting me glide down a hall like a movie star. Me+Em excels in creating practical yet elegant clothing. I’ve styled the dress with various items—a leather jacket, white sneakers, tall boots, and a winter coat.

Both the navy dress and the black jumpsuit bring joy and functionality to my wardrobe. They offer versatility, allowing for casual or smart styling, and fit into my almost-forty style aspirations perfectly.
